Summary

This is a reading of the ancient Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh, the most ancient literary narrative in the world. The poem's subject of the search for immortality is examined in its relationship to the elements related to writing, and to the permanence of buildings (made of the same materials as ancient Sumerian texts). Gilgamesh is, in a way, the epic of writing transcending death and celebrating itself. A reflexive dimension in the poem is thereby stressed.
